Performance > Two from the Chinese-American Fighter Club

2018
Told with spoken word alongside artist books, works on paper, and other objects and actions, I bring to life two bad-ass members of my 19th-century Chinese-American Fighter ‘Club’: Thomas Sylvanus (Ah Yee Way) and Wong Chin Foo. Between these two heroic men there is a run-away slave, civil war soldier, renegade lecturer, civil rights activist, cultural educator, cuisine tour guide, humorist, newspaper founder and editor, and husband and father. In a turbulent time of racism, hate violence, ignorance, and discrimination, these are inspirational stories about two remarkable immigrants who rose up and fought back against great adversity for their own American independence.
