Table of Conscience
2017 - Present
Misunderstood text can happen when one learns a new language, whether it is the second language at any age or the first language at an early age. For me, English was the second language I was learning as a child of immigrant parents. I think that surprising intersections of cultures are revealed in misunderstood texts. In this public interaction piece, I share three stories: one each from my mother, my brother, and me. And wear pins that I made of these texts using my 1977 Dymo labelmaker. At Flux Factory, people are welcome to share a story and make a misunderstood text pin to wear and keep. Some of these photos and stories are included in the exhibition Tongue Tide and will be part of a future zine/artist book.
